Mexico is one of the most attractive countries for people looking for their retirement, and it is not a surprise, since there are beautiful cities with a great variety of biodiversity, climates, culture, architecture and more.

However, contrary to what everyone would think, the most common destinations for retirement are not usually cities with large urban developments or great infrastructure. On the contrary, they are somewhat touristy and very small locations, to such an extent, that they may not be among the cities selected by INEGI to conduct the quality of life study.

If you are thinking of moving and enjoying life in retirement, here are your favorite destinations to do so, but remember that the best destination will depend on your tastes and expectations.

Valladolid

This small city located in the state of Yucatan, has a beautiful colorful architecture that speaks of important moments in the history of the country. Its tranquility and unparalleled security, offers attractions to enjoy day and night, besides having a variety of cenotes, archaeological ruins and museums.

Because of its strategic location this beautiful city is called "the pearl of the Mayan Orient", since it is only 160 km from Merida and Cancun. Therefore we consider it a great option for retirement because you have everything you need to live and what not, is less than 2 hours in these two beautiful cities.

Acquiring a property in Valladolid ranges from 700 thousand pesos to 4 million pesos depending on the location you prefer.

San Miguel de Allende

It is located in the state of Guanajuato, three hours from Mexico City. The center of this emblematic place is well known for the beautiful Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, built with neo-Gothic towers of pink quarry.

This picturesque city is full of cobblestone streets with colonial houses converted into galleries or museums that allow you to enjoy the history and cultural scene. In addition, there is a wide variety of restaurants that offer an outdoor terrace stay overlooking the central gardens. Due to its urban design, the city lends itself to long walks both during the day and at night, so that you can enjoy the wide range of gastronomy and culture on offer in its streets.

The cost of a house in this place will depend on the proximity to the historic center, the average price is 6 million pesos, however, several residential developments have been developed in the outskirts that offer cheaper housing.

Costalegre

If you are looking to live with the sea and nature, this tourist corridor shared between the State of Colima and Jalisco is perfect. It has little explored coasts and bays for total tranquility along with its jungle vegetation. It even developed the first inclusive beach destination in the country, called Cuastecomates, which offers roads, furniture, signs, bathrooms and access to the beach for the disabled and the elderly.

You will find a variety of restaurants with regional dishes and many activities on each beach, including fishing. You can rent a boat with expert captains or spend a day golfing in perfect weather on an 18-hole course.

The average price of housing in this region is 2.5 million pesos, depending on the location and proximity to the beach.

Merida

Once again, the capital of Yucatan is mentioned in our rankings and as we have mentioned in other articles, Merida combines the modern with the traditional. You can find a lot of culture, traditional food and amazing architecture in the center of this place. Plus all the new real estate developments that give you the opportunity to acquire a property based on your budget. The average cost is 2 million pesos.

The biggest advantage of Merida is that it is only 20 minutes from the beach, so there will be no impediment to spending a spectacular afternoon by the sea, while you live in the most populous city in the state of Yucatan.

Cozumel

If you are looking for total peace and quiet, we recommend you take a look at this island of Quintana Roo, its beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters are unmatched. You can also do water activities such as snorkeling and diving to see beautiful coral reefs and a great variety of colorful fish.

Its location allows you to cross to Playa del Carmen by ferry in just 35 minutes, so you can visit other destinations within the Riviera Maya. Cozumel also stands out for its sports, organizing every year the big fund with more than 1500 participants.

The cost of housing in Cozumel can be high due to the demand of foreigners who have bought property, giving the initial price is approximately 3.5 million pesos.

San Cristobal de las Casas

Located in the south of Mexico in the state of Chiapas, this place has one of the best climates in the country, as it combines the warmth of the jungle with the temperate nature of the mountains. You will have the opportunity to enjoy bohemian evenings with musicians playing all kinds of pieces while walking down the streets enjoying a locally grown coffee.

Chiapas has many attractions so in addition to the beautiful and colorful San Cristobal de las Casas you will have places to visit such as lakes, waterfalls, archaeological sites and more. This small town is now less than 30 minutes away from Tuxtla Gutierrez so you will have access to shopping malls, department stores, private hospitals and sporting events.

The average cost per house in this destination varies from one million pesos.

Remember that there are many other places to enjoy your retirement, such as Lake Chapala, Guanajuato, Puerto Vallarta or Aguascalientes, which also have incredible attractions. Now it's up to you to decide which is the best destination for your retirement.
