2024 has arrived and with it many plans to fulfill. And although 2023 is in the past, there is much to learn from it, especially if one of your plans this year is to move abroad.
The Expat Insider 2023 Report offers a unique insight, based on the opinions of more than 12,000 expatriates of 171 nationalities residing in 172 countries or territories. It evaluates 56 aspects ranging from the local cost of living to the quality of medical care and the speed of internet at home.
In 2023, 53 destinations met the minimum requirement of 50 respondents and are detailed in the overall country ranking.
Once again, Mexico consolidates its position as the most popular expatriate destination worldwide, taking first place and being voted as the place with the friendliest local population on two consecutive occasions.
Spain, in position 2, stands out by taking first place in the Quality of Life Index for the second year in a row. Although its results in the Working Abroad Index are average, the recent implementation of a visa for digital nomads could change the dynamic for many remote workers.
Panama, in third position, has made a dramatic return to the ranking after not having enough respondents in 2022. It is looking to attract digital workers and stands out as one of the five countries with the easiest visa processes.
Malaysia comes in fourth and Taiwan in fifth. Although the report does not specify why they are in the ranking, our research indicates that it is a favorite for expats because of its climate, hospitality and the friendliness of the people.
The other side of the coin
At the opposite extreme, Kuwait ranks 53rd, remaining at the bottom of the ranking. Despite changes in survey methodology, it has ranked at the bottom in nine of the last ten years, showing unfavorable results overall.
Norway, ranked 52nd, has experienced one of the biggest drops this year, falling 18 places compared to 2022, due to rampant inflation in Europe that has left expatriates dissatisfied, especially with high living expenses.
Turkey, ranked 51st, was already in the bottom ten in 2022, but its performance worsened. The local economic situation, political stability and limited freedom of expression are major concerns for expatriates in this country.
As for the motivations for moving abroad:
- 15% did so for work and career reasons.
- 8% sought a better quality of life
- Education was the reason for the 9% increase
- 10% moved for love and family
- And 4% had other reasons.
